In Tasmania, wages and conditions of employment are usually set in awards or agreements, legally binding documents that set out minimum wages and conditions of employment for specified employees including apprentices and trainees.

Employees can be covered by either State or Federal awards or agreements. The main business activity of an employer and/or the type of work that trainees and apprentices do, will determine which award applies. The job classification or level of the apprentice or trainee determines their wage rates.

Employers are covered by a Federal award if their business’ name, employer association or previous business name is listed in a Federal award or agreement.

Employers not covered by a Federal award or agreement, may be covered by a State award or agreement that applies to all employees in their industry or occupation.

State awards or agreements normally apply to all employees in a particular industry or occupation.

Workplace Standards Tasmania provides information on Tasmanian and Federal awards and agreements.

The National Training Award for Traineeships
State-based arrangements are provided for under the National Training Award (Tasmanian Private Sector)

The Federal National Training Award (PDF) applies to people undertaking a traineeship whose employer is listed in the award or belongs to an organisation that is respondent to the award. These rates also apply to employees covered by federal awards that adopt the National Training Wage.

Other Employment Arrangements
There are other employment arrangements available both at the state and federal level.

In Tasmania, employers and apprentices/trainees can be covered by other state employment arrangements such as an:

  • Industrial Agreement; or
  • Enterprise Agreement

At the Federal level, there are two options:

  • Certified Agreement;
  • Australian Workplace Agreement.
