More apprenticeship forums around Tasmania

Following the success of the Apprenticeship information forums held around Tasmania in July and August 2011, we are currently planning some extra forums in regions that were initially missed in the first round.  Dates, times and venues will be posted in industry newsletters and magazines as well as the RSA Newsletter as soon as they are confirmed.

The advantage to producers attending forums is that they have been able to get specific advice to meet the needs of their enterprise.

Your Future In Agriculture

A tremendous opportunity has been made available for young people around the State to gain some essential skills to help secure a job in Agriculture, thanks to some special project funding from the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

A two week training course will be held in the north-west of the State at the end of March and in the north in April for young people aged 16 - 25 years of age who are interested in gaining employment in agriculture or those who have just commenced employment.

Our Tasmanian Education and Training Adviser, Roger Tyshing, has been working with industry peak bodies and government to address ways of attracting more people, especially young people, into the agricultural industry.

The training is targeted to equip industry entrants with some basic skills to make them more employable as well as make them safer in the workplace.

OH&S, First Aid, Basic Chemical Handling, Quad Bike Handling, Chainsaw Operations and Basic Tractor Driving are the units being offered.  Upon successful completion of the core units participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment by the Registered Training Organisations carrying out the training.

Ultimately it is hoped that by participating in this type of program more young people will enter formal training through traineeships/apprenticeships resulting in a more skilled workforce for the industry.

About Roger Tyshing

Roger has a background in agriculture and horticulture. He has also worked in the community sector. As an Education and Training Adviser with Rural Skills Australia, Roger works with peak industry organisations and individual primary producers and horticulturalists promoting traineeships. He also works with schools, promoting agriculture, horticulture and conservation and land management as great career choices for young people.

Each year, Roger Tyshing runs the 'Discover Agriculture' program in conjunction with industry for students in years 10 - 12 to help them gain an understanding of the breadth of agriculture and the range of career pathways available in the industry.

He is working with a range of industry partners to implement a program that will equip industry entrants with the basic skills to enhance their employability and workplace safety.
